Our Sheep

At Handfuls of Purpose Farm, we focus on St. Croix parasite-resistant sheep, with a few Katahdins and crosses in the mix to enhance genetic diversity and resilience. These hardy breeds are 100% pasture-raised, receiving absolutely no grains ever—they thrive solely on a natural grass and pasture diet, which aligns perfectly with our commitment to clean, sustainable farming. We practice rotational grazing across our 50 acres to maintain healthy pastures, promote soil regeneration, and ensure our sheep have access to fresh forage year-round. All our sheep are raised without vaccines or pharmaceuticals, dewormed only with natural remedies, and provided with premium living conditions that prioritize their well-being and natural behaviors.

Adapting these sheep to the challenging East Texas climate was no small feat. When we first introduced our initial flock, the hot, humid summers and prevalent parasites posed significant hurdles, resulting in the loss of nearly two-thirds of them. However, the survivors have proven exceptionally resilient. After three years of thriving in these demanding conditions, our remaining sheep have developed highly robust immune systems tailored specifically to this environment. They’ve been rigorously tested in fields laden with heavy parasite loads, and their superior genetics shine through. They not only survive but flourish without artificial interventions.

Our breeding program emphasizes this proven performance. All ewes over the age of two have consistently lambed with at least two lambs per pregnancy, demonstrating excellent fertility and maternal instincts. Both ewes and rams continue to graze in parasite-challenged pastures, further selecting for the strongest traits and ensuring our flock’s ongoing adaptability. This natural selection process has created a line of sheep that are low-maintenance, disease-resistant, and ideally suited for similar climates. If you’re looking for resilient, productive sheep that embody practical excellence over showy appearances, we occasionally have them available for sale and perfect for small farms or homesteads seeking animals that perform reliably in real-world conditions.
