Geese
Our geese program began as an innovative experiment to provide a natural, sustainable feed source for our livestock guardian dogs, and it has evolved into a thriving part of our farm ecosystem over the past two years. We’ve steadily grown our flock, focusing on birds that are 100% pasture-raised, foraging freely on our wooded acreage without any supplemental grains or artificial feeds. This approach ensures they live in harmony with nature, contributing to soil health through their natural grazing and fertilizing behaviors while aligning with our pharmaceutical-free, humane standards including no vaccines, natural deworming only, and the best possible outdoor living conditions.
During peak laying season, each mature layer produces around 30 eggs, which we use primarily for dog nutrition but also occasionally offer for sale when abundant. Our geese are hardy and adaptable, selected for their ability to thrive in the East Texas climate with minimal intervention. They play a dual role on the farm: not only as a food source but also as natural pest controllers, helping to manage weeds and insects in our pastures. Like all our animals, we prioritize performance over presentation—our geese are chosen for their productivity, resilience, and integration into our self-sustaining system, not for show qualities. This results in a robust flock that enhances biodiversity, supports our dogs’ raw diet, and embodies our commitment to clean, faith-guided farming.
Chickens
Our chickens are an essential component of Handfuls of Purpose Farm, providing fresh eggs and natural pest control while fitting seamlessly into our rotational grazing system. Raised on our 50 acres of mostly wooded land, they are 100% pasture-raised and free-range, foraging for insects, seeds, and greens to supplement their diet. This diet, combined with our no-vaccine, natural deworming protocol, ensures they maintain optimal health through robust immune systems and humane, stress-free living conditions with plenty of space to roam, scratch, and exhibit natural behaviors.
We focus on several heritage breeds selected for their hardiness and productivity in the humid East Texas environment, emphasizing performance over pedigree or appearance. Our hens are prolific layers, producing nutrient-rich eggs that we use to feed our family and dogs, with surpluses available for sale or donation to the community. The chickens also contribute to farm sustainability by controlling pests in our vegetable patches and sheep pastures, reducing the need for any interventions. Roosters are kept in balanced ratios to protect the flock and promote natural breeding, resulting in chicks that inherit strong, climate-adapted traits.
